There's something undeniably special about the way the golden Hawaiian sun dips into the Pacific at Waialae Beach Park. Those final moments of daylight painting everything in warm hues that seem designed specifically for family portraits. And that's exactly what happened during my recent session with the Matsumoto family.

While Waikiki gets most of the attention (and for good reason – it's stunning!), I'm always drawn to the quieter corners of Oahu for family photography sessions. Waialae Beach Park is one of those perfect local spots that offers everything a photographer dreams of – soft sand, swaying palms, mountain views, and that crystal clear turquoise water that screams "Aloha!" in every frame.
Located just east of Waikiki in the Kahala area, this beach gives us all the quintessential Hawaii vibes without the crowds. For families with keiki (children) who need space to run and play during our session, it's absolutely perfect.
A Family Session to Remember
The Matsumoto 'ohana arrived just as the afternoon light was starting to soften. Three generations together – grandparents visiting from Japan, mom and dad who moved to Oahu five years ago, and their two little ones who were born right here on the island.
What I love most about family sessions is capturing the in-between moments – the genuine laughter when dad spins his daughter around, the quiet connection between mom and baby, the proud smiles of grandparents. These unscripted moments tell your family's unique story in a way that posed portraits simply can't.
The kids splashed in the gentle shore break, we built sandcastles, and everyone relaxed into just being together. That's when the magic happens – when everyone forgets about the camera and simply enjoys this beautiful place we're lucky enough to call home.
